Long before collectors showed much interest in vintage Omega dress watches, there was one model that garnered all of the attention: the Pie-Pan Constellation. Nicknamed for its uniquely shaped dial that resembles a baking dish, the Pie-Pan is a favorite of Omega diehards and vintage aficionados alike, and after trying one on, it’s not hard to see why.
The Constellation line was launched by Omega in 1952, after a limited production of a watch commemorating their centennial in 1948 that was aptly named the Century. While the Century was never intended for retail production, it received such wide acclaim for both its sumptuous case design and it's chronometer-level accuracy that Omega decided to launch a new line.
Omega adorned the newly-minted Constellation line with a likeness of the Cupola of the Geneva Observatory. This observatory was one of several in Europe that put watches through a rigorous testing process with accuracy standards much more stringent than those of the Control Officiel Suisse des Chronometres, or COSC. The cupola is a reminder of the watch's superior engineering, the eight stars a nod to Omega's acing of every category of the observatory accuracy tests in 1931. Embracing their legacy of horological achievement, Omega went on to obtain COSC chronometer cortication for Constellation line, and it’s one of the few dress watches of the era that can boast this distinction.
Most Pie-Pans that we see are gold plated, which was popular in the 1960s among cost-conscious watch shoppers. Steel models are quite a bite more rare, and rarer yet are solid gold models, especially in rose. This example, with an immaculate rose gold case, is quite the looker. The lugs are very sharp and the cupola and stars on the case back show no wear. Complete with its original box, strap and buckle, this watch is virtually New Old Stock.
If you’re looking for a vintage dress watch, few are more stylish, iconic or better built than a Connie. Rose gold case, Pie-Pan dial, dauphine hands, COSC certified- this watch has it all.
